Set off on an exciting adventure through the magical and paranormal world of Worderland
Find specific words on a board filled with letters and earn points
Use hints or a variety of spells to help you overcome difficult levels
Word Search Magic is a fun, word-finding game where players will be given a board filled with letters to find specific words from. Even the fictional world the game is based on, Worderland, is a pretty clever word play in its own, though the game nowhere resembles the rather overused and somewhat cliché “Alice in the Wonderland” theme.
Much like a standard match-3 game, Word Search Magic has a progression path for you, the player, to go through. You’ll need to use a scroll to play each level but there are special levels which will consume 2 scrolls instead of the usual 1. These special levels, when completed, will grant you a unique reward, be it unlocking a new spell (a.k.a. power-up) or a new accessory for the young protagonist witch in the game.
It’s also interesting to note that you’ll get to play up to level 50 for the first bracket of levels before you’ll be required to unlock the next stage. It is uncertain what you’ll need to do to unlock the next bunch of levels except to reach level 50, but I reckon it wouldn’t involve asking your online friends for help since the game doesn’t exactly have a social aspect.
In terms of gameplay, Word Search Magic is developed using a very simple concept – word finding. As opposed to giving you a grid with several letters, you are given a much larger board that is filled to the brim with letters. There will also be something like a combination dial right above the board where the specific words you’ll need to find are displayed. Then, all that’s left for you to do is to find the words in the board and select them by simply swiping over the letters.
To make the game more interesting, each level will have varying objectives. Sometimes, you’ll need to earn a certain score; at other times, you’ll be required to find a certain number of words. The difficulty of the game increases gradually as well. At first, words are only hidden in a front to back horizontal manner or a top to bottom vertical manner, but eventually, things get more difficult with words going back to front or bottom to top. Thankfully, I’ve not yet encountered words that are hidden diagonally. That should make the words so much harder to find.
Word Search Magic also implements a time limit system. How does it work? Well, there’s a time limit bar at the bottom that has a purple tip on the right. There is also a moving indicator on the bar. Your goal is to make sure you keep finding words quickly and consecutively just so the indicator remains in the purple segment of the bar on the right, and not on the left side where the time you have will run out.
While the indicator is in the purple zone, words that you find will randomly turn a letter into a purple letter. These letters can be rather distracting when there are several of them on the board, but in some way, they function as a ready-made hint for certain words that you need to find. Words that contain any purple letters will also gradually fill up a special potion bottle that will grant you extra points at the end of a successful level.
Although you can’t skip a word if you can’t find it on the board, you can still find a way out by using a hint. Hints can be bought using real money or can be earned for free (this word is used very loosely here) by watching ads. Not to mention, you can also win free hints by completing special levels and by rating the app on Google Play or the App Store.
Of course, there are also various spells that you can use to get yourself out of tight spots in a game. For instance, the Sands of Time spell that will restore the time to the maximum when used, but before you can use it, you’ll need to first earn 2 purple letters.
There isn’t a lot to say about the visuals in this game since it’s mainly a word game. The art style is pretty nice though, and admittedly, when coupled with the background music, you’ll get to enjoy the game’s witchy/paranormal theme. However, I’ve a bone to pick with the ads that this game runs. The full-screen ads in Word Search Magic might be a bit tricky for people to exit out of. You’ll need to pay close attention to find the “x” button, which will appear after a few seconds.
In short, Word Search Magic or Worderland is a rather entertaining and challenging word-finding game that doesn’t have a competitive streak to it, and considering the rich vocabulary of words it contains, may even teach you a few new words now and then. It’s a great game to pass the time without stressing yourself out. Do give it a try!
